Inverted AeroPress
The inverted AeroPress method is a favourite among home brewers looking for a smoother, more filter-style cup. Flipping the AeroPress upside down gives you greater control over the steep, preventing any liquid from dripping through before you're ready to press.
What you'll need
- AeroPress and AeroPress filter
- 17g coffee (approximately 8.5 teaspoons), ground for AeroPress
- 230ml water at 90°C (about 5 minutes 30 seconds off the boil)
- Kettle, tablespoon, and cup
- Scales if you have them, otherwise eyeballing is fine
How to brew
1
Set up your AeroPress in the inverted position and pre-wet the filter paper in the filter basket - this removes any papery taste and helps it seal properly.
2
Add 17g of coffee, start your timer, and pour in 80ml of 90°C water.
3
Stir a few times to wet all the grounds and leave to bloom for 20 seconds.
4
Pour in a further 70ml of water and stir vigorously 20 times.
5
Screw the filter cap on securely and leave until the timer reaches 1 minute.
6
At 1 minute, carefully flip the AeroPress onto your cup and begin pressing slowly and steadily over the next minute.
7
Top up your cup with the remaining 80ml of hot water to finish.
A few tips to get the best from your cup
Like the standard method, the AeroPress works best at lower water temperatures. The pressure applied during pressing compensates for the lower heat, extracting flavour efficiently without the need for near-boiling water.
A slow, controlled press is everything here. Take the full minute - pressing too fast bypasses the pressure that makes the AeroPress so effective and can leave you with a murky cup.
Don't skip the bloom. That initial 80ml pour releases carbon dioxide from freshly roasted coffee, visible as small bubbles on the surface. Letting this happen before adding the rest of the water means better extraction and a noticeably smoother, less sour result in the cup.
