MOKA POT
The Moka Pot is a stovetop classic - compact, affordable, and capable of producing a rich, strong brew without any fuss. It's worth noting that while the result is concentrated and bold, a Moka Pot is its own thing rather than a direct espresso replacement. Think of it as a powerful brew in its own right.
What you'll need
- 12g coffee (approximately 6 teaspoons), ground for Moka Pot
- Moka Pot
- 100ml water at 30–40°C (roughly ¾ cold water mixed with ¼ boiling water)
- Kettle, spoon, and cup
- Scales if you have them, otherwise eyeballing is fine
How to brew
1
Add 100ml of warm water to the lower chamber of the Moka Pot.
2
Place the filter basket onto the lower chamber and add 12g of coffee - level it off but don't tamp it down.
3
Screw the upper and lower chambers together firmly.
4
Place on the stove over medium heat and leave until you hear a gurgling sound or see the water has fully bubbled through to the upper chamber.
5
Pour into your cup immediately.
A few tips to get the best from your cup
For light roasts, start with water at around 30–40°C - a mix of roughly 75% cold and 25% boiling water gets you there. This gives the coffee enough time to extract properly, aiming for a total brew time of 3 to 4 minutes.
For medium to dark roasts, start warmer at 50–60°C, using equal parts cold and boiling water. Keep the heat at medium-low and expect a brew time of around 2 to 3 minutes.
Avoid high heat at all stages. Too much heat forces water through the grounds too aggressively, pushing fine particles through the filter and leaving you with a gritty, unclean cup.
