French Press
The French press is a classic, no-fuss brewing method that delivers a consistently rich, full-bodied cup. If you enjoy coffee with depth and texture, this is the brew for you.
What you'll need
- French press
- 20g ground coffee (roughly 3 tablespoons)
- 240ml water at 94°C (about 1 minute 50 seconds off the boil)
- Tablespoon, cup, and kettle
- Scales if you have them - otherwise eyeballing works fine
How to brew
1
Add 20g of ground coffee to your French press.
2
Begin by pouring in just 40ml of hot water to saturate the grounds.
3
Stir 10 times to ensure all the coffee is wet, then let it rest for 30 seconds.
4
Pour in the remaining water to reach 240ml.
5
Place the lid on top and leave the brew to steep for 3 minutes.
6
Slowly press the plunger down over 45 seconds to 1 minute.
7
Remove the lid and stir gently until the grounds sink to the bottom.
8
Pour into cups straight away - leaving it to sit will cause the coffee to over-extract.
A few tips to get the best from your cup
With dark roasts, skip that pre-plunge stir - it can bring out harsh, over-roasted notes you don't want.
For light to medium roasts, a few stirs just before plunging can help balance out any sourness.
Take your time with the plunge - rushing it leads to a gritty, muddy cup. Slow and steady is always the move.
Light roasts need hotter water to unlock their flavours, as the beans are denser and harder to extract.
Dark roasts do better with slightly cooler water. Too much heat and the brew can turn bitter quickly.
