    Aeropress

    Portable, lightweight, and surprisingly versatile - the AeroPress is the ideal travel companion for anyone who doesn't want to compromise on their coffee away from home. The standard method produces a concentrated, full-bodied cup with a character close to espresso.

    What you'll need

    • AeroPress and AeroPress filter
    • 17g coffee (approximately 8.5 teaspoons), ground for AeroPress
    • 230ml water at 90°C (about 5 minutes 30 seconds off the boil)
    • Kettle, tablespoon, and cup
    • Scales if you have them, otherwise eyeballing is fine

    How to brew

    Place your filter in the AeroPress cap and add 17g of coffee.

    Pour in 80ml of 90°C water and start your timer.

    Stir a few times to wet all the grounds, then leave to bloom for 20 seconds.

    Pour in the remaining water and seal the AeroPress to create a vacuum.

    At 90 seconds on the timer, begin pressing down slowly and evenly - take 30 to 50 seconds to press all the way through until you hear a soft hiss.

    A few tips to get the best from your cup

    The AeroPress works at lower temperatures than most other brew methods. This is intentional - the pressure does the heavy lifting in extracting flavour, so the water doesn't need to be as hot.
    Press slowly every time. Rushing the plunge defeats the purpose of the pressure and can result in a messy, uneven extraction.
    The bloom in step 3 is more important than it might seem. That first pour of water triggers the release of carbon dioxide trapped in freshly roasted coffee - you'll see small bubbles rise to the surface. Getting the CO2 out first allows the remaining water to absorb the coffee's flavours far more effectively, and helps take the edge off any sourness in the cup.
