    Venkids Valley Estate

    Venkids Valley Estate

A short, scenic drive from Madikeri through rivulets and jungle leads you to Venkids Valley Estate - one of Coorg's most celebrated third-generation coffee farms. Run by Pavan and Shilpa Nanjappa under the brand name Papakuchi Coffee, the 200-acre estate sits at 3,600 feet in the lush heart of Kodagu district, surrounded by a forest so dense and alive that it feels less like a plantation and more like a carefully tended piece of wilderness. Over 40 varieties of jungle trees grow across the property, including wild fig, mango, avocado, jackfruit, and soapnut - each contributing to a shade structure that protects the coffee plants and enriches the soil with falling leaf litter year-round.

The farm's approach to traceability is among the most meticulous in Indian coffee. The estate is divided into named "patte" - small, individually managed patches - each marked with a board indicating the elevation, the coffee varietal planted, the shade trees overhead, and the names of the workers responsible for its care. This means that every lot El Bueno purchases from Venkids Valley can be traced not just to the estate or the processing method, but to the precise strip of hillside from which the cherries were picked. In a country where traceability has historically been limited, this level of granularity is exceptional.

Pavan Nanjappa grew up on this land, learning to read the soil, the seasons, and the coffee plants alongside his father. His understanding of the farm is tactile and instinctive - born of thousands of mornings walking the patte, tasting cherries straight off the branch, and making decisions that can only come from years of intimate familiarity. Shilpa brings a complementary set of skills: raised in Bangalore and holding both a business degree and a master's in English Literature, she leads all marketing, storytelling, and buyer relationships, giving Papakuchi Coffee a voice that is as articulate as the coffee itself is expressive.

The farm's commitment to its workers is genuine and long-standing. All workers and their families live on the estate in provided housing, with electricity, clean water, and access to medical facilities. Children attend schools supported by the estate, and workers participate in a profit-sharing model that gives them a real stake in the quality of each harvest. Solar panels power the estate's processing infrastructure, and rainwater harvesting reduces dependence on groundwater. For El Bueno, Venkids Valley represents a vision of coffee farming where community, ecology, and quality are not competing priorities but one unified whole.
