    Salawara Estate

    Salawara Estate

"Salawara" translates to "string of blessings" - and one taste of the coffee from this magnificent estate makes the name feel entirely deserved. Established by the British in the late 1880s, this 360-acre estate in Belur, Hassan district, sits at 3,700 feet in the fertile foothills of the Western Ghats, in a region that benefits from both the northeast and southwest monsoons. This double monsoon pattern means the estate receives generous, well-distributed rainfall across the year, keeping the soil perpetually moist and the canopy continuously green through a growing season of unusual length and consistency.

The estate has been nurtured across three generations by the YK family, who have built upon its colonial foundations with a distinctly modern sensibility. Coffee here grows in a carefully managed intercropping system alongside black pepper, areca nut, oranges, vanilla, and tall silver oak trees that provide both shade and structural support. This polyculture approach is not merely agricultural pragmatism - it reflects a philosophy of abundance, of a farm that gives back to its soil as much as it takes from it. The result is land that improves with each passing year, growing richer, more complex, and more alive.

What makes Salawara Estate uniquely extraordinary is the presence of five man-made lakes surrounding the property, constructed over generations to capture and store monsoon water. These lakes create a microclimate of sustained humidity and moderated temperature that extends the cherry ripening period and concentrates sugars in ways that conventional irrigation cannot replicate. They also support a remarkable aquatic and bird ecosystem - kingfishers, egrets, and otters are regular presences along the banks. The water from these lakes feeds the washing and fermentation infrastructure, and its mineral composition is believed to contribute to the coffee's particular depth and intensity.

In 2018, Salawara earned the prestigious Best Quality Bean Award from the Ernesto Illy Foundation - one of the most coveted and technically rigorous recognitions in the global coffee world. The award validated what buyers who had been quietly sourcing from the estate already knew: that Salawara's coffee, with its dense, fruit-forward sweetness, layered acidity, and extraordinary structural complexity, belongs in the company of the world's great origins. Since the award, the estate has ventured into experimental nano lots including whisky barrel fermentation and greenhouse-controlled drying, continuing to push the boundaries of what Indian coffee can express.
