Ratnagiri Estate - Coffee Farm
Perched in the southwestern Ghats near Bababudangiri - the legendary birthplace of coffee in India - Ratnagiri Estate is a Rainforest Alliance certified farm that has fundamentally redefined what Indian specialty coffee can be. Founded in 1927 by the Patre family, the 117-hectare estate came into its modern identity under Ashok Patre, who began his specialty journey in earnest after 2010. Inspired by the global single-origin movement, Ashok invested heavily in infrastructure: stainless-steel fermenters, dedicated drying houses, and a washing station built to exacting standards. Selective picking across five to six rounds ensures that only perfectly ripe cherries enter the processing stream, and the result is coffees of remarkable complexity.
The flavour profile of Ratnagiri coffee is unmistakably its own. Tart, clean acidity leads the palate; behind it come waves of jammy berry, stone fruit, and a deep cocoa structure that lingers long after the cup is finished. These are not flavours that emerge by accident - they are the product of meticulous fermentation control, careful water management, and a growing environment shaped by altitude, shade, and the cool Deccan Plateau winds that sweep across the estate each evening. Tall silver oak trees stand as sentinels across the farm, diffusing harsh afternoon sunlight and contributing to a microclimate that is among the most consistent in Karnataka.
Beyond the cup, Ratnagiri Estate has become something of a model for how Indian coffee farms can evolve. Ashok has welcomed visits from Q-graders, international buyers, and curious roasters, opening the estate to scrutiny in a way that was once unusual in Indian coffee culture. Transparency about processing methods, lot separation, and cherry selection has built extraordinary trust with specialty buyers globally. Today, 60% of Ratnagiri's volume is specialty grade - a figure almost unheard of for an estate of its size and history.
The estate's commitment to environmental responsibility is as robust as its commitment to cup quality. Water used in processing is treated and recycled, shade trees are retained and replanted, and the biodiversity of the surrounding Western Ghats forest is actively protected. Workers live on the estate with their families in provided housing, and children attend the estate-run school. Ashok's vision is not merely of a great coffee farm but of a thriving, self-sustaining community - one in which the well-being of the land, the workers, and the coffee are inseparable.
