Karadykan Estate (Sangameshwar Coffee Estates)

Karadykan is one of four estates run by Sangameshwar Coffee Estates (SCE) - among the earliest pioneers of specialty coffee in India and still counted among the country's most respected growers. SCE's plantations cover roughly 810 hectares across Chikmagalur and the Billigiri Ranga Hills, organised into four estates: Attikan, Gungegiri, Kondadkan, and Karadykan.

The group is now in its third generation, led by Mr. S. Appadurai and Mrs. Hamsini Appadurai. Karadykan itself was first planted in the early 1900s by Charles and William Crawford, and passed after Independence to Shri K.S. Vaidyanathan - Mr. Appadurai's grandfather.

Geography and terroir The estate stretches over about 250 hectares (620 acres) in the Chikmagalur hills at roughly 3,400 feet. Three hills frame the property, earning it the local name "Trishul," and a sizeable stream fed by natural springs runs straight through it. Coffee here is grown alongside pepper, areca nut, and figs, working with the surrounding biodiversity rather than against it. Varietals include Selection 9, Catuai, Chandragiri, and S.795 Robusta.

A hands-on approach to quality From 1997 to 2001, Mr. and Mrs. Appadurai lived at Karadykan full-time - four years that shaped the practices still in use today. Pickers move through the field in three separate rounds, taking only the deepest red, fully ripe cherries each time, and harvesting is done lot-by-lot for full traceability. To hold that quality through curing, the family also runs its own facility in Hassan - Lakshmi Curing Works, fitted with modern equipment.

People first Staff and their families receive free housing and medicines, and the estate maintains a hospital, a creche, and a full-time doctor and nurse who live on-site.
