    Baarbara Estate

    Baarbara Estate

At the foot of the ChandraDhrona hills - historically Baba Budan Giri, where Indian coffee was first planted by the Sufi saint Baba Budan in the 17th century - Baarbara Estate has been cultivating exceptional Arabica for over 120 years. Run by the third generation of the Indavara family under MG Plantations, the estate sits at a commanding 3,850–5,350 feet and is certified by both UTZ and the Rainforest Alliance. The estate's age is evident everywhere you look: in the gnarled, productive old-growth coffee trees, in the deep laterite pathways worn smooth by generations of pickers, in the stone-built fermentation tanks that have processed countless harvests.

Dense forest patches bordering the plantation create a thriving ecosystem unlike almost any other coffee farm in India. Tigers, wild boars, barking deer, and giant Malabar squirrels move through the plantation with ease, and over 100 species of birds have been recorded on the estate grounds. This biodiversity is not incidental - it is the direct result of the Indavara family's refusal to clear forest for expansion, a decision that has preserved both the ecological integrity of the land and the quality of the coffee grown on it. The forest provides natural shade, regulates soil moisture, and contributes leaf litter that enriches the soil without any artificial input.

Selection 795 Arabica - developed by the Central Coffee Research Institute and long considered India's finest Arabica variety for its disease resistance and cup quality - is the predominant cultivar here, grown under the rich indigenous canopy. Careful fermenting, washing, sun-drying on raised beds, and a controlled milling process bring out the estate's signature flavour: intense dark chocolate, sweet caramel, and notes of dried apricot with a round, full body and a clean, lingering finish. The altitude ensures a slow ripening that concentrates sugars in the cherry and produces beans with exceptional density.

Baarbara Estate is one of India's most decorated and admired farms, with a reputation built over decades of consistent, uncompromising quality. The estate supplies some of the country's most respected specialty roasters and has been featured in international specialty publications. For El Bueno, sourcing from Baarbara is a connection to the very roots of Indian coffee culture - a living link to the hillside where it all began, still producing coffee worthy of its extraordinary history.
