Difference Between Arabica and Robusta

A Beginner’s Guide to Coffee: What’s the Difference Between Arabica and Robusta?

New to coffee and not sure where to start? You’re in the right place.

At El Bueno Coffee Roasters, we believe great coffee doesn’t have to be complicated. Whether you’re brewing your first cup at home or just trying to figure out what the heck “single-origin” means, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s kick things off with the basics: the two most common types of coffee beans—Arabica and Robusta.

So, What Are Arabica and Robusta?

When people talk about coffee beans, they’re usually referring to one of these two: Arabica (pronounced uh-RAH-bih-kuh) or Robusta. These are the heavy-hitters of the coffee world, and knowing the difference between them can help you choose the right coffee for your taste.

☕ Arabica
Arabica beans are known for their smooth, slightly sweet flavor. Think notes of chocolate, nuts, fruit, or even flowers, depending on where they’re grown. They also have less caffeine than Robusta, which makes them a bit easier on the palate and stomach.

Grown at high altitudes in cooler climates
Higher acidity = brighter, more complex flavor
Most specialty coffee (like ours!) is made with 100% Arabica
If you’re new to coffee or love a cup that’s mellow and flavorful, Arabica is your new best friend.

☕ Robusta
Robusta is the bold, intense cousin of Arabica. It has a stronger, more bitter taste—sometimes described as earthy or nutty—and it packs nearly twice the caffeine.

Grows at lower altitudes and is more resilient
Lower acidity = heavier, more bitter profile
Often used in instant coffee and espresso blends
If you like your coffee strong and punchy, or you need a serious caffeine kick, Robusta might be your thing.

Arabica or Robusta, mellow or bold—there’s no wrong choice. Just the one that tastes right to you.
